Making the low go…………….
I think scary movies are just gory they do not scare me what scares me is a low especially night time lows.
Hypoglycaemia or low as it is commonly refer to is a lower than normal level of blood glucose the literal meaning is under-sweet blood (hypo-under, glykys, haima – sweet blood) even the name evokes fear, the mood that comes along is equally under-sweet. Unfortunately every insulin-dependent diabetic gets hypoglycaemic from time to time the medical text books have a simplified explanation for why it happens and how it should be treated. It looks very good on paper eat 15 grams of carbohydrate wait 15 minutes then test – rinse, leather repeat till you are back in normal blood glucose levels – simple, right?
However most people living with diabetes will tell you things are not always as black and white and also each person’s diabetes varies.

Making the low go – depends on how bad the low feels. For me it may feel like the jittery feeling that sometimes accompanies drinking way too much coffee plus hunger, this type of low I treat with Dex 4 glucose tablets. It works fast and I do not love it to the point of overeating them. Also they do not melt in the summer when stored in a car where I keep a big bottle. I keep another bottle at my desk at work and one in my room. I have several little bottles in my purse, meter case and nightstand.

Then there is the other low feeling, the wired sensations of a narrowly missed car crash with the adrenaline pumping and the fight or flee feel except unlike a narrowly missed crash this feeling extends till I am sometime over normal blood glucose levels. This type is disturbing and very frightening and comes with among other symptoms the felling of being ravenously hungry. My good intention is always to treat this low with the trusty Dex 4 glucose tablets but I always end up also eating everything I can get my hands on till my brain has had enough glucose to tell the rest of me to start feeling better – Making the low go…………………………….
