The Cure
Last week news broke that a dog with type 1 diabetes has been cured. Researchers at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain have succeeded in completely curing the dog with a single session of gene therapy by introducing a glucose sensor into its muscle.
First rodents now a dog, there is a glimmer of hope yet for humans, just a bit of hope.
I was never promised a cure when I was diagnosed. My doctor, a young resident from Vietnam told me about watching diabetes take her dad piece by piece. She became a doctor to help others avoid the same fate; the only hope she was selling was –
Pay attention to diabetes and live well with diabetes”

I was never told there would be a cure either. I was just told about all the bad things that can happen to people with diabetes.
The idea of a cure is very far withdrawn from my daily life but, every once in a while, it’s nice to see that glimmer of hope in the distance. I love the picture you posted too – the colours are lovely.

Wise words from, no doubt, a wise doctor. We can hope and wait for good luck to come our way (in the way of a cure or even better treatments), or we can be mindful of what IS in our means and abilities. We can pay attention to our diabetes, and consequently, can live well with diabetes.
Wise words indeed.

This would be so cool if they can one day do the same for humans. I imagine they’ll have to study the dog over a certain amount of time to see if it really “took” – but so promising! Awesome!
