Sipping on insulin

Travelling with Diabetes

It is a habit I pickup sitting at my desk working with headphones on. The idea was to create a little white noise, drowning co-worker voices and general office noise. But soon parts of the headphone wire found itself into my mouth. At first, I was just trying to keep it from tangling, while my hands where busy typing. Then it became a habit, like chewing on your pen.

A couple of weeks ago, I was home watching TV and on my laptop typing away. I did not even know how it got into my mouth but it got there. I swear I did not even realize it was in my mouth.

Without a thought and on auto pilot, I sunk my teeth into my infusion set tube. The thin wire like tube that delivers insulin from my pump has just been cut in two. Leaving little droplets of insulin on my tongue, it is pretty much tasteless. However the strong scent triggers my brain to create its own taste leaving my mouth feeling like I just ate a Band-Aid.

No, I do not sip insulin or chew Band-Aids and I stopped chewing on wires. I bought myself a wire free Bluetooth headphone.

  2. That totally sounds like something I would do! That’s why I switched from wearing a medic alert necklace to wearing a bracelet instead: I couldn’t keep the dumb charm from finding it’s way to my mouth! Haha :)

  3. Wow, biting through tubing is one I’ve never heard before. And I always wondered what insulin tastes like – LOL. So basically it tastes like nothing, but the smell is so bad it makes you think it tastes horrible?? :)

  4. Hi Lauren,

I guess it is a good thing I do not wear medic alert necklace (I am a Bracelet girl too) I can imagine breaking my tooth on that.

  5. It is tasteless but in the mouth with the ear, nose and throat connection it is horrible.

  6. Ick, Yuck –
You’re probably the first to have done that. Other than some cats I’ve read about.

  7. I totally can see why cats will do it. It’s fun to play with.
