This week Bank of Canada unveiled a new all polymer (as in plastic) $100.00 bank notes. It has the face of Sir Robert Laird Borden the 8th Prime Minister of Canada. He served from October 10th 1911 to July 10th 1920.

On the other side of the bill there is a bottle of insulin, how cool is that, it recognizes breakthrough in Canadian research, which includes the discovery of insulin and the invention of the pacemaker depicted by the image of electrocardiogram. There is also a strand of DNA and the words “medical innovation” written right next to the bottle of insulin. The new bill will be in circulation, November 2011.

My excitement about this new $100.00 bill is that my awesome family will be using them to stuff my stockings come this Christmas. As a gag, get it – Insulin for the diabetes sufferer.

My real excitement, my hope is that the image of a bottle of insulin will become an educational and advocacy tool for all Canadians who see and come into contact with the bill.

Below is the official Bank of Canada video of the $100.00 bank note.
